North Carolina is set to face the Big 12’s West Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte on New Year’s Day.

ABC will televise the matchup from Bank of America Stadium, scheduled for 2p.m. ET on Dec. 27.

Here’s the official announcement:

The Tar Heels went 8-4 this year, but enter this matchup on a 2-game losing streak. North Carolina started the year 6-0, but was upset at home by Virginia, and went only 2-4 in its last 6 games. Quarterback Drake Maye was not quite the same player as he was last year. Last season, Maye threw for 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

This year, he was able to throw for only 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. There are still questions on whether or not Maye will play in this game. When asked about it last week, he said he hadn’t made a decision yet.

After the season-opening loss to Penn State, the Mountaineers rattled off four consecutive wins, before losing at Houston on a Hail Mary. West Virginia ended its season winning the last two regular season games, and announced that coach Neal Brown will be back in 2024.

This will be the third matchup between these 2 schools, with West Virginia winning the most recent matchup in 2008. The only other matchup was won by North Carolina, 20-13, in 1997.
