North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is having a memorable afternoon in his first career away game.

Maye, who threw for 3 touchdowns in the first half, ran one in on UNC’s first drive of the third quarter.

As he crossed the goal line in the corner of the end zone, he found North Carolina legend Sam Howell standing there as he prepared to be interviewed by ESPN.

Maye and Howell shared a brief moment before Maye retreated back to the sideline. Here’s the clip:

Howell left Chapel Hill with virtually every passing record in school history. Maye already one record, which he set last week — the most TD passes in a first-career start (5) — against Florida A&M. Howell is now with the Washington Commanders.

Maye beat out Jacolby Criswell for the starting job during fall camp.

Maye’s rushing touchdown continued a run of 28 unanswered points for the Tar Heels. App State once led this game 21-7, but Maye’s performance has helped turn things around for the Tar Heels.

North Carolina was a 2.5-point underdog coming into this game.
