North Carolina fans lined up outside the Smith Center on Thursday afternoon to welcome the Tar Heels back to Chapel Hill after their run to the national title game.

UNC fell to Kansas late Monday night, but it was still a historic run for the Tar Heels. North Carolina pulled off three major upsets en route to the title game, including an iconic win over Duke in the Final Four.

Here’s a look at the reception the team received on Tuesday afternoon:

Coach Hubert Davis also spoke at the event and thanked the fans for their efforts in recent weeks.

“You guys were such an encouragement to us,” Davis told the crowd. “You helped us this entire season. Your love and your support for us, cheering us on, it made us play harder. It made us practice harder, it made us prepare harder.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much. As sad and disappointed as I think all of us are, I’m so proud of these kids.”

This type of response in line with how fans have responded to the heartbreaking defeat vs. Kansas. Most fans remained supportive and prideful when reacting to the game late Monday night.
