3 Notre Dame assistants linked to NFL opportunities, per report

Marcus Freeman could have more staff hires ahead for Year 2. A new report links 3 Notre Dame assistants to NFL opportunities.

According to Zach Barnett of FootballScoop, special teams coach Brian Mason, wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey and safeties coach Chris O’Leary have interviewed with NFL teams.

Barnett details that Mason has visited with the Indianapolis Colts and is one of the top candidates to be the team’s new special teams coordinator. O’Leary and Stuckey, meanwhile, could be joining John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens staff. The report adds that running backs coach Deland McCullough was recently targeted by an NFL team, but appears likely to stay with the Irish.

What to make of assistants interviewing for the NFL

The fact that the Colts and Ravens are interested in N

otre Dame assistants speaks well of the staff Freeman assembled. The coach, though, is likely preparing for the potential headache at hand as the timing could hardly be worse.

Interviewing doesn’t mean any of the above coaches will actually leave, but it’s possible that Freeman could be looking for 3 new assistant coaches just weeks before spring practices get underway. No one wants to rush a hire, but it’s important to have position coaches during the 15 practices.

For now, it’s a wait-and-see situation in South Bend.
