3 takeaways from Notre Dame’s blowout win over Boston College

Notre Dame defeated Boston College 44-0 on Saturday afternoon.

This was the Irish’s second-biggest win over the Eagles in series history. Notre Dame defeated Boston College 54-7 back in 1992.

Here are three takeaways from the win:

Strong identity

Even in a potential look-ahead spot with USC on the schedule next week, Notre Dame was never in trouble against the Eagles.

The Irish stuck to their identity of a strong rushing attack and a dominant defense. Logan Diggs led the way with 122 yards and one touchdown on just 15 carries. He set the tone early with a 51-yard run on the first play from scrimmage.

Defensively, Notre Dame was able to shutdown Boston College. The Eagles averaged only 3 yards per play and managed only 10 first downs.

Ben Morrison’s big day

Notre Dame true freshman cornerback Ben Morrison picked off three passes in the win. He’s the third Notre Dame player (and first freshman) to have a three-INT game this century.

He now has five interceptions on the season, which is the most for any Notre Dame player since Manti Te’o had seven in 2012. Morrison did this while matching up against one of the best receivers in the ACC in Zay Flowers for most of the game.

As Notre Dame hits the home stretch, it appears to have a dominant cornerback capable of shutting down one half of the field. That could be a huge advantage against USC in Week 13.

Record-breaking day

Morrison wasn’t the only Notre Dame player to find his way into the record books for this game.

Tight end Michael Mayer cleared 2,000 receiving yards in this contest. He finished the game with five catches for 64 yards. He’s the 13th player in Notre Dame history to surpass that threshold.

Defensive lineman Isaiah Foskey also had a memorable day. His sack near the end of the first half gave him 25 for his career, which is now the most in Notre Dame history.
