Notre Dame has made a late addition to the class of 2022.

The Fighting Irish picked up a commitment from 4-star running back Gi’Bran Payne on Friday afternoon. Payne originally signed with Indiana this cycle, but was released from his NIL earlier this offseason.

Here’s Payne’s announcement:

Payne is the No. 22 running back in the country for the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s also the No. 10 player from the state of Ohio.

Payne requested to be released from his NIL after former IU running backs coach Deland McCullough accepted the same role at Notre Dame. McCullough no doubt played a major role in bringing Payne to South Bend.

The talented running back was also considering Kentucky.

He joins a loaded running back room that will be tasked with replacing Kyren Williams in 2022. Williams posted back-to-back 1,000+ yard seasons before heading to the NFL this offseason.

Notre Dame closes the class of 2022 with 22 commitments, led by 5-star linebacker Jaylen Sneed. The Fighting Irish have the No. 7 class in the country for that cycle, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Payne is expected to arrive at Notre Dame this summer. He’ll be competing with players like Logan Diggs and Chris Tyree for playing time.

Notre Dame’s spring game is on April 23.
