James is originally from Texas, so he’ll now be playing much closer to home. His departure is a big loss for Notre Dame. James was a 4-star prospect and the No. 22 receiver in the country for the class of 2023, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
James did not earn much playing time as a true freshman this season. He recorded 1 catch for 12 yards on the year.
James was one of several Notre Dame receivers to enter the transfer portal this offseason after the program parted ways with former receivers coach Chansi Stuckey. Chris Tyree, Tobias Merriweather and Rico Flores Jr. have all entered the transfer portal this offseason.
Notre Dame has also been aggressive in adding receivers via the portal. The Fighting Irish have received commitments from former Clemson receiver Beaux Collins as well as ex-FIU receiver Kris Mitchell.
