Breaking down Notre Dame's 2022 recruiting class after the Early Signing Period
The majority of Notre Dame’s 2022 recruiting class has been finalized.
The Fighting Irish signed 21 players during the Early Signing Period, but coach Marcus Freeman and his staff will have a chance to continue recruiting this class for the next several weeks.
By all accounts, Notre Dame’s class is in a good spot. The Fighting Irish have the best class in the country amongst programs who went through a coaching change this cycle. Oklahoma and LSU are the only other such programs to be in the top 20 so far.
It’s a class that’s led by talent in the front seven and in the trenches. Eight of Notre Dame’s top nine commitments in this class play offensive line, defensive line or linebacker. The Fighting Irish also have a quality quarterback in the mix in 4-star Steve Angeli.
Here’s a breakdown of Notre Dame’s 2022 recruiting class so far:
Class ranking: No. 7 nationally
Total commits: 21
Blue-chip commits (4-and-5-star prospects): 17
Highest-rated offensive recruit: 4-star WR Tobias Merriweather | No. 124 overall | No. 18 LB | Camas, Washington
Highest-rated defensive recruit: 5-star LB Jaylen Sneed | No. 35 overall | No. 6 LB | Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Final thoughts: This is one of the best classes Notre Dame has signed in recent memory. Freeman’s influence has a lot to do with that, and his presence — along with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees — likely helped keep much of it together after Brian Kelly’s departure. Freeman’s focus on being an elite recruiter should help propel Notre Dame to the next level in the coming years, and this class is a great start in that transition.
