Notre Dame came in at No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings that were revealed earlier this week, giving the Fighting Irish a path to the final four.

Notre Dame is 10-1 on the season with its lone loss coming vs. No. 4 Cincinnati early in the year. Brian Kelly’s squad has progressed recently, which was best shown during their 55-0 win over Georgia Tech last week.

College Football Playoff committee chair Gary Barta acknowledged that win and Notre Dame’s other improvements when asked about the Irish by Rece Davis on Tuesday night.

“Notre Dame has been building momentum all year,” Barta said on ESPN Tuesday night. “They play terrific defense. Their offense has a lot of weapons, a lot of experience there.

“Notre Dame is highly thought of by the committee.”

Notre Dame’s path to the College Football Playoff is relatively simple. It need Cincinnati to lose to Houston in the AAC Championship Game and it needs the Big 12 to not have a 12-1 conference champion. Notre Dame is likely to move up to No. 5 this week ahead of the loser of Ohio State-Michigan.

Notre Dame is nearly a 3-touchdown favorite vs. Stanford in its season-finale on Saturday.
