ESPN’s College GameDay crew discussed whether or not Notre Dame is still a top 5 team in the country on Saturday morning.

The panelists were going through some of their over reactions to Week 1. Despite playing Ohio State well last week, all 3 of the GameDay analysts said Notre Dame is not a top-5 team right now but is still close to that status.

“They’re on the edge, just on the outside of the top 5,” Kirk Herbstreit said.

David Pollack cited Notre Dame’s struggles at quarterback in Week 1 as an area of improvement. Tyler Buchner was making his first career start vs. the Buckeyes and finished just 10-of-18 for 177 yards. However, Pollack was impressed with the Irish’s defense in Week 1.

“They’re on the cusp of being a top 5 team but they’re not top 5,” Howard said. “Impressed with the way they showed themselves in Columbus.”

The Fighting Irish dropped from No. 5 to No. 8 in this week’s AP Top 25. They’re the only team in the top 10 with a loss so far this season.

Notre Dame will be looking for some major offensive improvement in Week 2 against Marshall. It will be the first home start for Buchner and the first home game for Marcus Freeman as head coach.

Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
