ESPN's FPI projects outcome in Notre Dame-Cal game
Notre Dame will be looking for its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon as it hosts Cal.
The Fighting Irish are a heavy favorite to get into the win column this week, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.
FPI is projecting Notre Dame to win the game 91.1% of the of the time. The Bears are 2-0 this season after picking up wins over UNLV and UC Davis.
However, FPI does not account for key injuries over the course of a season. Quarterback Tyler Buchner will miss the next 4 months with a shoulder injury, which means backup Drew Pyne will be starting vs. the Bears.
Notre Dame is 4-0 all-time against Cal. However, these programs have not met on the gridiron since 1967. Notre Dame and Cal played have previously played a pair of home-and-homes in 1959-60 and 1965 and 1967.
Notre Dame is also the betting favorite to win this game. The Irish are consensus 11-point favorites as of Wednesday afternoon.
Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on NBC.
