Greg McElroy evaluates Notre Dame’s chances to make College Football Playoff in 2024

Greg McElroy spent some time on Thursday dissecting Notre Dame’s chances to make the College Football Playoff 2024.

The Fighting Irish are coming off a 10-win season in Marcus Freeman’s first year at the helm. Next year, with the CFP expanding to 12 teams, the Irish will hope to compete for a spot in the playoff at the end of the year.

Notre Dame made a pair of major additions on the offensive side of the ball as it brought in offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock from LSU and quarterback Riley Leonard from Duke. McElroy shared his thoughts on both of those moves in his breakdown.

“I think they’ve made a significant addition in bringing back Mike Denbrock, who is going to be the offensive coordinator,” McElroy said

. “He was at LSU and the job he did with Jayden Daniels and the job he did with that offense as a whole was pretty remarkable … So Mike Denbrock being back at Notre Dame is massive.

“Another massive coup was bringing in Riley Leonard … Hopefully Mike Denbrock can accelerate the development of Riley Leonard and he can look a little bit more like Jayden Daniels, who brought home the Heisman Trophy last y

ear. That would be tremendous.”

McElroy did acknowledge that Leonard will need to be more consistent on down-field throws at Notre Dame than he was at Duke.

After breaking down some of Notre Dame’s biggest arrivals and departures, McElroy said the Irish are in “really good shape” going into next season.

“I think their odds of making the playoff in 2024 … is around 40%,” McElroy said. “Which, by the way, is pretty dang good. I know people are going to say, ‘that’s not good.’ I think that’s actually pretty good. I really do.

“I think 9-3 is about right, I could see 10-2. I don’t think 10-2 guarantees you a spot, but I think in all likelihood, if you go 10-2, you’re in a really good spot to potentially get to the 12-team playoff.”
