Here’s where Notre Dame ranks in key offensive categories under Tommy Rees

Notre Dame underwent plenty of change this offseason, but offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is one of the lone remaining constants from the Brian Kelly era in South Bend.

Rees took over play-calling duties at his alma mater back in 2020. Over the previous 2 seasons, Notre Dame was successful as a team — albeit not explosive offensively.

But to start 2022, Notre Dame has an 0-2 record and questions are being asked of the Irish’s offensive game plan and personnel. Notre Dame has scored just 31 total points (including a meaningless TD at the end of the Marshall game) through 2 contests this season.

Here’s where Notre Dame ranks in a few key offensive categories nationally since Rees took over as Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator in 2020:

  • Points per game: No. 31
  • Yards per play: No. 38
  • Big plays (10+ rush yards, 20+ pass yards): No. 21
  • Yards per pass attempt: No. 32
  • Yards per rush attempt: No. 54
  • Passer efficiency rating: No. 38

Note: these ranks only consider FBS teams who have played in at least 20 games over the previous 2+ season. Numerous teams come in below that number due to the pandemic and other factors. Notre Dame’s sample includes 27 games with Rees at the helm.

The Irish fall outside of the top 20 in each of those categories and outside the top 30 in all but “big plays.”

Notre Dame faces Cal in Week 3.
