Jack Swarbrick to step down as Notre Dame’s athletic director

Jack Swarbrick will step down as Notre Dame’s athletic director, according to a report.

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde was first to share that news on Thursday morning. Swarbrick is expected to step down from his role in the first quarter of 2024.

as already identified Swarbrick’s successor: NBC Sports Group chairman Pete Bevacqua.

“This is a dream come true,” Bevacqua said in a statement to Sports Illustrated. “With the exception of my family, nothing means more to me than Notre Dame. I don’t have a memory in my lifetime, quite literally, where Notre Dame wasn’t a part of it. At this stage of my life, I feel like everything I’ve done has prepared me for this.

“I didn’t have a burning desire, necessarily, to be an athletic director. I had a burning desire to b

e the athletic director at Notre Dame.”

Bevacqua is a Notre Dame alum. He was a walk-on punter in the 1990s and played for head coach Lou Holtz.

Swarbrick, 69, has been Notre Dame’s athletic director since 2008. He oversaw the hirings of Brian Kelly and Marcus Freeman during his tenure. He also hired men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry this past offseason.

Bevacqua is expected to begin the transition into his role as athletic director on July 1. He will serve as a special assistant for athletics to Notre Dame president Reverend John Jenkins
