JJ Starling, star Notre Dame freshman, reportedly opts for transfer portal

JJ Starling had a strong freshman season as a 5-star prospect for Notre Dame. Unfortunately for the program, Starling is reportedly opting for the transfer portal with the portal opening up on Monday.

Jeff Borzello with ESPN reported on Starling’s move:

Coming out of high school, Starling was a 5-star combo guard and the No. 21 player in the country for the class of 2022 per the 247 Sports Composite Rankings. He was also the top player out of New York for the cycle.

As a freshman, Starling appeared in 28 games (24 starts) and was a key piece for the Irish. He finished 4th on the team with 11.2 points per game and also averaged 2.8 rebounds and 1.1. assists while shooting 42% from the floor.

Outlook for Starling

Unfortunately for Notre Dame, the ACC All-Freshman selection is likely to have his pick of suitors via the portal. Then again, it is possible Starling is keeping his options open while Notre Dame conducts a coaching search for Mike Brey’s replacement.

We’ll see where he winds up and whether or not Starling reverses course down the road.
