Luke Fickell comments on Notre Dame speculation

Notre Dame is the market for a new head coach, and Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell is near the top of the list for potential replacements.

Fickell, who has a chance to make the College Football Playoff with Cincinnati over the next couple weeks, didn’t do much to shut down any potential interest he might have in the Notre Dame job.

Here’s what he told reporters on Tuesday:

Fickell is catholic and is believed to hold the Notre Dame job in high regard. He’s originally from Ohio and played football at Ohio State. He’s also spent the bulk of his coaching career with the Buckeyes.

Other candidates to take the job include current defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman and I

owa State coach Matt Campbell. It’s possible other compelling names will surface in the coming days.

Brian Kelly officially became LSU’s head coach on Tuesday morning. He had been with Notre Dame since 2010 and was the winningest head coach in program history.

Notre Dame will learn its newest College Football Playoff ranking on Tuesday night. The Fighting Irish could be as high as No. 5 in this week’s ranking. Fickell’s Bearcats are expected to be in the top three.
