A conversation between offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and quarterback Drew Pyne during the Cal game caught national attention this week.

NBC cameras showed Rees appearing to tell Pyne, “Do your f — —ing job” on a sideline phone in the first half of Notre Dame’s win over the Golden Bears.

Both Pyne and Rees have already responded to the video, but head coach Marcus Freeman weighed in on the situation on Thursday. Freeman downplayed the impact within the program.

“It’s something that might have been a bigger issue to those outside the football program than it was to us inside the program,” Freeman told reporters. “That tough coaching is what you get every day.”

Pyne told reporters on Saturday that he asked Rees to coach him hard and said he responds well to that style of coaching. Rees said he wasn’t proud of the specific language he used in that moment.

Notre Dame will be in action again on Saturday against North Carolina.
