Marcus Freeman evaluates Drew Pyne’s performance after his 1st career start

Notre Dame picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon against Cal.

Quarterback Drew Pyne made his first career start in relief of the injured Tyler Buchner. He threw for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win.

However, Pyne started out slow. The majority of his production came in the second half after he had settled into the game.

At his postgame press conference, coach Marcus Freeman was asked about Pyne’s performance.

“I told Drew, ‘Relax, man. Go out and be Drew Pyne and execute,'” Freeman said, via 247Sports

. “And it helped because you gained a little confidence in the running game in the second half.

“And then he started making those passes. And wide outs have to do their job. It’s not all on Drew Pyne. We had a couple of drops that we have to make sure that don’t happen. But he’s a warrior, man. He is a competitor.”

In the second half, Pyne completed 10-of-11 passes for 93 yards and 1 touchdown.

Notre Dame will travel to Chapel Hill next week to face a 3-0 North Carolina team.
