Marcus Freeman has been Notre Dame’s head coach for just under two seasons now, but he’s already matched Brian Kelly’s tenure in South Bend in one key area.

With Notre Dame’s win over USC on Saturday night, Freeman has now delivered two top-10 victories at Notre Dame Stadium during his time as the Irish’s head coach. That matches Kelly’s total from his 12-year tenure in South Bend.

Notre Dame’s other top-10 home win under Freeman came vs. then-No. 5 Clemson last season.

Notre Dame also nearly won vs. then-No. 6 Ohio State in South Bend earlier this season. Freeman has led Notre Dame to six ranked victories so far during his tenure.

Kelly’s only home victories vs. top 10 teams during his tenure were against Clemson in 2020 and vs. Stanford in 2018.

Notre Dame is now 6-2 this season as it enters an idle week in Week 8. The Fighting Irish are in position to make a run at a New Year’s Six bowl if they can have a strong finish to the 2023 season.

Kelly started off well at LSU last season, winning the SEC West. But the Tigers lost four games in Kelly’s first year at the helm and have already dropped two contests so far in 2023.

Notre Dame will face Pitt in Week 9 after its bye week.
