Marcus Freeman and Brian Kelly are tied in one key category for Notre Dame head coaches.

With Saturday’s win over Clemson, Freeman matched Kelly for AP top-5 wins. It took Freeman less than one season to beat a top 5 team, doing so in Week 10 vs. No. 5 Clemson. Coincidentally, Kelly’s lone top 5 win at Notre Dame also came against Clemson in 2020.

When Kelly earned his first top 5 win at Notre Dame, Clemson was the No. 1 team in the country in November 2020.

For Freeman, it was a big upset victory over No. 4 ranked Clemson. Heading into the Week 10 matchup, Clemson made the College Football Playoff’s top 4 in the initial rankings.

It was a season-defining win that made Notre Dame bowl eligible. To this point in the season, it was one of Freeman’s most important wins as Notre Dame’s head coach.

While the start of Freeman’s tenure was rocky, he was able to redirect the course of the season with six wins in the last seven games. If Notre Dame wins the final three games, Freeman will have a 9-3 record heading into the bowl game at the end of the season.

Notre Dame will take on Navy in Baltimore, Maryland, on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
