Marcus Freeman has named his starting quarterback.

Tyler Buchner will start on Friday against South Carolina, Freeman told reporters on Monday. Buchner hasn’t played since suffering a shoulder injury that ended his regular season all the way back in Week 2 against Marshall.

Buchner was replaced by Drew Pyne, who started the final 10 games of the season before entering the transfer portal earlier this month.

Freeman laid out Notre Dame’s depth chart in his comments to reporters:

“That will probably be the plan, go with Tyler with the 1s,” Freeman said. “Tyler and Steve [Angeli] have been running with the 1s, have gotten reps with the 1s this week during bowl prep. But as we get down here and get closer to the game … Tyler will be with the 1s, Steve Angeli with the 2s and Ron Powlus with the 3s.”

Buchner beat out true freshman Steve Angeli and walk-on Ron Powlus for the starting job. Angeli is expected to play against the Gamecocks at some point, however.

Notre Dame’s quarterback situation for 2023 is still uncertain. The Fighting Irish are expected to add a quarterback via the transfer portal at some point this offseason. They will also add incoming freshman Kenny Minchey into the mix.

Notre Dame and South Carolina will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday.
