Marcus Freeman shares thoughts on Notre Dame’s addition of QB Sam Hartman

Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame made big splash in the transfer portal this week with the addition of former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman.

Hartman arrives in South Bend as the ACC’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns. He amassed 110 TD’s over the course of his Wake Forest career, which also included an Atlantic division title in 2021.

Earlier this week, Freeman went on ESPN

to discuss the future of the program and Hartman’s arrival.

“Having a quarterback like Sam Hartman in your program is going to elevate the play of everybody,” Freeman said. “The quarterback room, the wideouts, everyone on the team.”

Freeman also touched on what may have attracted Hartman to the Fighting Irish.

“I think for him, he was looking to get to an NFL-type system,” Freeman said. “A pro-style type of offense. That’s obviously what we have with coach [Tommy] Rees and our offensive system. I think i

t’s really a win-win for everybody. I look forward to getting him here and seeing how he’ll fit into our offensive scheme and how we can tailor our scheme around our quarterbacks and obviously be productive, which is the ultimate goal.”

Notre Dame’s passing offense was limited in 2022. With Tyler Buchner sidelined for the season, the Irish turned to backup Drew Pyne to lead the offense. Notre Dame won 9 of its last 11 games, but the Irish ranked just 98th in passing yards per game nationally.

Notre Dame finished the 2022 season with a 9-4 record in Freeman’s first year at the helm.
