Mike Brey finds landing spot as former Notre Dame coach reportedly extends career

Mike Brey is staying in coaching after all, and the former Notre Dame coach has landed on his new job, according to a report from BullsInsider.

Brey is expected to be hired at South Florida after he spent the last 23 seasons at Notre Dame, won 483 games, more than any other Notre Dame coach, and landed 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. His overall record is 483-280 (.633). Notre Dame was 11-21 this season.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported

that he just spoke to USF Athletics Director Michael Kelly. He said Brey is a candidate and has interviewed for the USF basketball job, but there’s only been discussions. There’s been no offer and nothing has been formalized.

On Jan. 19, Brey announced that the 2022-23 season would be his last as head coach at Notre Dame, although he said that he was definitely not done coaching. At the time o

f his retirement announcement, Brey was 580-321 overall and ranked 50th on the Division I career wins list. He was 481-269 with Notre Dame, a victory total that ranks sixth among active coaches at their current schools. Brey played college basketball at Northwestern State in Louisiana and George Washington.

Brey, 63, would replace Brian Gregory who went 79-105 in his 6 seasons at USF. He is the first men’s basketball hire for Kelly.

Brey would take over a program that has finished above .500 twice in the last 12-seasons and has not been to the NCAA tournament since 2012, BullsInsider noted.
