Mike Brey leaving Notre Dame at end of 2022-23 season, Irish announce

Mike Brey’s time at Notre Dame will be over when the 2022-23 season comes to a close. UND made the official announcement Thursday.

The news broke in a Thursday afternoon report from Tom Noise of the South Bend Tribune stating that Brey was planning to retire

. UND’s announcement does not call Brey’s departure a retirement but says he will step away after the season.

UND released statements from AD Jack Swarbrick and others.

“Mike and I have talked often in recent years about a future transition in the program’s leadership and during our most recent conversation we reached the mutual conclusion that the end of this season represented the right time,” said University Vice President and James E. Rohr Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick.

Brey agrees that Irish basketball needs new leadership for 2023-24 and beyond.

“It has been a great run for me and our program over the past two decades, but it is time for a new voice to lead this group into the future,” said Brey. “I want to thank our student-athletes, assistant coaches and support staff who have played such a key role in the culture we have created.”

“From Fr. Malloy hiring me, to Fr. Jenkins’ guidance and Jack’s friendship, I leave this place with immense gratitude to the University and I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished together. I look forward to working with Jack in any role that can help the Notre Dame family.”

Brey, the winningest coach in program history with 481 victories, has guided the Irish to the NCAA Tournament 13 times, including 3 trips to the Sweet 16 and 2 appearances in the Elite Eight. He was recognized as the National Coach of the Year in 2011 with multiple honors and named the Big East Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2011.

Brey’s Irish are 9-10 in 2022-23, with a 1-7 record in conference play. The regular-season finale is set for March 4 at Clemson, with the home finale on March 1 against Pitt.
