Mike Brey is emerging as a potential candidate to replace Patrick Ewing at Georgetown, according to a report.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello wrote Thursday
that Brey — as well as former Louisville coach Rick Pitino — is in the mix to land the Georgetown job, should the Hoyas decide to fire Ewing and pay his significant buyout.
Brey announced earlier this season that he would step away from Notre Dame after 23 seasons on the job. However, he has also said he plans to continue coaching
.
Here’s Borzello’s assesment of the Georgetown situation:
Since giving Patrick Ewing a fully guaranteed extension following the Hoyas’ run through the Big East tournament in 2021, Georgetown went 6-25 overall and 0-19 in the Big East last season and are 7-22 overall and 2-16 in conference play for 2022-23. If he’s fired, Ewing is owed an eight-figure buyout. But, given the performances of the past two seasons, Georgetown might have to pay it. Names circulating to replace Ewing include Rick Pitino (Iona) and Mike Brey (Notre Dame).
Brey has been arguably the best men’s basketball coach in Notre Dame history, but the Irish have made the NCAA Tournament just once in the last 6 seasons.
Notre Dame is off to a 2-15 start in ACC play this season.
