Mike Brey no longer expected to become head coach at South Florida

Mike Brey is no longer expected to become the next head coach at South Florida.

Earlier this month, it was widely reported that Brey would be taking over the Bulls’ program. However, things have evidently changed.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, South Florida is instead hiring Kennesaw State coach Amir Abdur-Rahim for the role.

This could mean Brey, who stepped down from Notre Dame after this season, will sit out from coaching for the 2023-24 season. Brey previously told reporters that his decision to leave South Bend after 23 seasons did not mean he was retiring

.

Brey has been a college basketball head coach every year since the 1995-96 season. He spent 5 years at Delaware before moving to Notre Dame in 2000-01.

Brey won 483 games during his time with the Fighting Irish, which is the most in program history. Only Digger Phelps (393) and George Keogan (327) have won more than 200 games in Notre Dame history.
