Mike Brey sounds off on ACC refs after final game at Notre Dame

Mike Brey wasn’t happy with how his final game at Notre Dame was officiated on Tuesday night.

The Fighting Irish lost a close game to Virginia Tech, which closed out Brey’s 23-year tenure in South Bend. The game was flipped in closing moments as Virginia Tech was awarded 2 technical free throws on a controversial call.

The decision meant possession (and 2 free throws) for the Hokies even after Notre Dame was fouled on the play. Virginia Tech then scored to go up 3 and was able to get a stop on Notre Dame’s final possession.

“I’ll be very honest now that I’m not in the league anymore,” Brey said. “I think that last play, if you have an A officiating crew, and that was not an A crew, you say, basketball play, and we shoot the free throws and we play basketball.

“I think we got a little over analyzation on that part of it. Look, Virginia Tech made plays, but I don’t think that was handled right.”

Brey is not retiring and is expected to pursue other head coaching jobs this offseason.

Notre Dame is also currently in the midst of a national search to find Brey’s replacement. Notre Dame finished this season with a 11-21 record.
