National college football analyst picks BYU to upset Notre Dame
Notre Dame’s trip to Las Vegas to face BYU in October is quickly becoming a popular upset pick amongst college football analysts.
247Sports’ Josh Pate picked the Cougars to defeat Notre Dame in a recent video where he predicted 5 potential upsets for the 2022 season.
His reasoning boils down to Notre Dame’s uncertainty at quarterback and a BYU program that’s rich with continuity in 2022.
“What do we know about Brigham Young?” Pate asked. “We know that, according to Bill Connelly’s returning production ratings, [BYU is] the No. 2 team in America in returning production. We know they are 1 of 18 or 19 teams … that return a quarterback, an offensive coordinator, a defensive coordinator and a head coach.”
Pate also discussed Notre Dame’s ongoing quarterback battle between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne. Regardless of who wins it, Pate argued that BYU will have had enough time to scout and game plan for Notre Dame’s new-look offense.
“However their quarterback situation shakes out, you’ve gotten a good look at it if you’re Brigham Young,” Pate added. “So you really get to dial up your entire Super Bowl-game philosophy here.
“Including the Ohio State game, this will be one of, if not the, most physical games you play all year if you’re Notre Dame.”
Here’s video of Pate’s comments. His analysis of Notre Dame-BYU begins at the 2:47 mark:
Notre Dame and BYU meet on Oct. 8 in Las Vegas. The game will be broadcast on NBC at 7:30 p.m. ET.
