Notre Dame 5-star safety commit Peyton Bowen is down to just two schools, according to national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman.

Spiegelman said in an episode of On3’s Inside Scoop this week that, while Bowen will continue to hear from other programs until signing day, he’s now focused on Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

The Sooners have the proximity advantage to Bowen’s home in Denton, Texas. They also already have a commitment from his high school teammate and 5-star QB prospect Jackson Arnold.

“I think it’s coming down to Oklahoma vs. Notre Dame,” Spiegelman said. “I think Notre Dame is in a really good spot with getting him on campus earlier this fall. And Oklahoma also has gotten him on campus. We know that Jackson Arnold, his teammate and close friend who he grew up with, [is committed to Oklahoma]. Oklahoma is closer to Denton, Texas, than South Bend is. But Notre Dame is still in a good spot. I think those are the two teams to watch.”

Despite Oklahoma’s involvement, Spiegelman is more optimistic about Notre Dame’s chances to hang on to Bowen than he has been in the past.

“I think that visit really loomed large for the Irish as well as these in-home visits coming up,” he added. “Like we’ve said time and time again …. Marcus Freeman was the key recruiter for Peyton Bowen before he became the head coach. So now that he’s the head coach, that’s a really good spot to be in if you’re the Irish.”

He also noted that Bowen’s unofficial visit to South Bend for the Clemson game was a big deal for Notre Dame’s chances.

Bowen is the top-ranked recruit in Notre Dame’s 2023 signing class. He’s the No. 24 overall player and the No. 2 safety in the country, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s been committed to Notre Dame since January.
