Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class is bracing for another big hit.

The Fighting Irish were ranked No. 1 nationally by various outlets earlier in the cycle, but they’re now trending in the wrong direction. Currently, Notre Dame is ranked No. 3 in the country by 247Sports Composite rankings.

However, Notre Dame’s top-ranked commitment — 5-star defensive back Peyton Bowen — is now expected to sign elsewhere.

According to On3’s Sam Spiegelman, Bowen’s pending decommitment is just one of the factors that is leading Notre Dame outside the top five in the national rankings. Other current Notre Dame commitments like Jaiden Ausberry and Jaden Greathouse are also still being recruited by other top programs.

“I believe [Bowen] will end up elsewhere other than Notre Dame,” Spiegelman said on The Inside Scoop on Monday. “That was my takeaway from spending time around him in Denton County this weekend.

“I think this is trending toward them going outside the top five. I think they’ll still sign a really good class overall. You’ve got to remember it’s Marcus Freeman’s first real class as the head coach of the Irish. And they haven’t had the season that probably most would have anticipated for them.”

Notre Dame is also currently No. 3 in the On3 national rankings for the 2023 cycle.

Notre Dame is 4-3 on the season and has struggled offensively throughout the year. However, the Irish have a chance to get back on track this weekend against Syracuse.

Kickoff is at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
