Navy has parted ways with head coach Ken Niumatalolo, the program announced on Sunday.

The decision comes after Navy fell to Army in double overtime on Saturday. Niumatalolo spent the last 15 years as Navy’s head coach.

Niumatalolo has been a mainstay in the Notre Dame-Navy rivalry for most of the last two decades. He led the Midshipmen to wins over Notre Dame in 2009, 2010 and 2016.

However, the Navy program has faltered over the past couple years. The Midshipmen went 4-8 this year and missed a bowl game for the third consecutive season.

Niumatalolo departs as the winningest head coach in Navy history. He has 105 wins in his career — 50 more than the next closest Navy head coach. It will be interesting to see what direction Navy goes in replacing Niumatalolo for 2023.

Notre Dame opens its 2023 season against Navy in Ireland on Aug. 26. Notre Dame has won six straight games in this series.
