Navy quarterback Tai Lavatai will not return to the field this season, the program announced after its win over Temple on Saturday.

Lavatai suffered the injury in the first quarter against the Owls. The Midshipmen went on to win 27-20 in overtime to improve to 3-5 on the season.

That injury will have significant ramifications for Notre Dame’s game against Navy in November. Lavatai entered Saturday’s game with 785 passing yards on 90 attempts this season. He’s also rushed the ball 110 times for 297 yards and scored 10 total touchdowns (five passing, five rushing).

Lavatai was replaced by Xavier Arline, who went 0-for-1 against the Owls. He did run the ball 16 times for 54 yards and one touchdown in the win.

He also scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime:

Notre Dame has won four straight meetings against Navy. The Midshipmen’s last win in this series came in 2016. These programs did not meet in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Before facing Navy, Notre Dame will have a tough test in Week 10 against Clemson. Notre Dame plays at Navy on Nov. 12.
