For the first time ever, Notre Dame will face an FCS opponent in 2023.

The Fighting Irish announced on Tuesday afternoon that they will host Tennessee State for a nonconference showdown on Sept. 2, 2023.

As rates continue to rise for scheduling weaker FBS opposition — like Marshall and UNLV, for example — more programs have begun to explore the FCS route.

It’s possible this approach will become a more frequent strategy under new head coach Marcus Freeman. This is Notre Dame’s first schedule announcement since he took over for Brian Kelly at the end of last season.

Tennessee State went 5-6 last season. The Tigers’ schedule included a loss to Mississippi State in late November. Tennessee State is coached by former Ohio Star and NFL legend Eddie George.

Notre Dame’s 2023 schedule is now set. The Fight Irish will play Navy, Central Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Wake Forest, Clemson, Duke, Louisville NC State, Pitt and Stanford.
