Notre Dame announced on Monday that Steve Angeli will be the team’s starting quarterback for the Sun Bowl against Oregon State, and it did so in the most creative way possible.

Angeli will have some big shoes to fill after Sam Hartman opted out of Notre Dame’s bowl game on Monday. Hartman had 2,689 yards passing and 27 touchdowns this year as the starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish.

Angeli, who has appeared in 9 games over the last 2 seasons, will make his first career start.

Angeli was a former 4-star QB in the 2022 class. The 247Sports Composite ranked him as the No. 21 player at the position. He hails from Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic. This season, he accounted for 272 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception through the air while completing 19 of his 25 pass attempts.

His most extensive action came on Sept. 2 when the Irish hosted Tennessee State in a 56-3 blowout. Angeli completed eight of his 11 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns that day. He also went 6-for-7 for 92 yards and a score in the 58-7 win over Pitt.

Kickoff from the Sun Bowl will be on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. ET on CBS.
