Notre Dame basketball coaching search: ESPN updates latest top candidates

Notre Dame’s basketball coaching search continues to make progress.

With the Fighting Irish being eliminated from the ACC Tournament earlier this week, the program can now fully move forward with their efforts to replace Mike Brey.

On Thursday morning, ESPN’s college basketball staff gave an update on Notre Dame’s search

.

According to the report, Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry “appears to be one of the favorites.” Colgate coach Matt Langel is also “picking up steam,” per the report.

Shrewsberry has been very impressive in his 2nd season with the Nittany Lions. Penn State is on the NCAA Tournament bubble and could reach the Big Dance this season for the 1st time since 2011. P

enn State has just 4 NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 50+ seasons.

Langel has also been rising up the ranks at Colgate. The Raiders are headed to the NCAA Tournament again this March, which marks their 3rd straight trip to the Big Dance (and 4th in 5 years) under Langel. Prior to his arrival, Colgate had just 2 NCAA Tournament appearances in its history.

Brey is stepping away from the program after 23 years at the helm.
