Notre Dame defensive lineman Gabe Rubio will not be with the Fighting Irish this spring, according to a report.

Rubio is no longer listed on Notre Dame’s 2024 roster for spring football. According to InsideNDSports, Rubio is stepping away from the program to tend to personal matters.

The report, which cites a conversation with a team spokesman, also notes that Rubio is not currently in the transfer portal. The report also does not rule out Rubio potentially returning in time for the 2024 season.

Rubio would be entering his senior season at Notre Dame if he returns to the team in 2024. His best season with the Fighting Irish came in 2022 when he totaled 17 tackles and 4 tackles for loss. Rubio missed multiple games due to injury this past season, but ended the year with 11 tackles and 1 forced fumble.

If Rubio doesn’t return to the team, Notre Dame will have the option of replacing him during the spring transfer window. The Fighting Irish already have one transfer commitment from a defensive lineman this season in former Duke pass rusher RJ Oben.

Rubio has spent the past 3 seasons at Notre Dame. He was a 4-star prospect in the class of 2021. Rubio has 2 years of eligibility remaining.
