Notre Dame finalizes defensive coaching staff by promoting staff member to LBs coach

Notre Dame has finalized the defensive coaching staff, officially promoting former Michigan State star Max Bullough on Tuesday.

During the 2023 season, Bullough was a graduate assistant on Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame staff. Now, Bullough is being promoted to linebackers coach for the Fighting Irish.

Bullough is the final piece of Notre Dame’s defensive coaching staff. Al Golden will lead the group as defensive coordinator to go with defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator Mike Mickens and defensive line coach and run game coordinator Al Washington.

Bullough was a 4-year letter winner and a 3-year starter for the Spartans as an impact middle linebacker. He was a first-team All-Big Ten recipient in 2012 and 2013 and was a captain for Michigan State’s B1G Championship and Rose Bowl-winning team in 2013. Bullough finished h

After a brief tenure in the NFL, Bullough got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Cincinnati in 2019. At that time, Freeman was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Bearcats.

Bullough would go on to spend 3 seasons as a GA for Nick Saban’s Alabama staff before reuniting with Freeman on the Irish staff in 2023. Now, he’ll get a chance to continue his development as a coach while leading Notre Dame’s linebackers.
