Notre Dame has 4 players listed on Sporting News’ preseason All-American team, which was released over the weekend.

Defensive lineman Isaiah Foskey, tight end Michael Mayer, offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson and defensive back Brandon Joseph received the honor.

Foskey, Mayer and Patterson were named to the first team while Joseph landed on the second team.

Foskey returns to Notre Dame after recording 10 sacks last season. He’s expected to lead Notre Dame’s pass rush in 2022. This will be his 4th season in South Bend.

Mayer is a good bet to end the year as the Mackey Award winner. Last season, he caught 71 passes for 840 yards and 7 touchdowns. He’ll be a major part of Notre Dame’s offense and should be a frequent target of Tyler Buchner or Drew Pyne.

Patterson is entering his 5th season with the Fighting Irish and has become a staple of their offensive line. Last season, he was a third-team All-American according to Phil Steele.

Joseph is a Northwesern transfer who has big shoes to fill — he’s replacing Kyle Hamilton, who went in the first round of the NFL Draft earlier this offseason. Joseph recorded 9 interceptions and 6 pass deflections in his last 2 seasons with the Wildcats.

Notre Dame opens the season with Ohio State on Sept. 3.
