Notre Dame will add transfer wide receiver Kaleb Smith to the program for the 2023 season.

Smith entered the transfer portal earlier this month after he spent the last 5 seasons at Virginia Tech. He will be a graduate transfer and will play his final season of college football at Notre Dame.

Here’s his announcement:

Smith was an impact player for Virginia Tech as the team’s leader in receptions and receiving yards in 2022. Smith had 37 catches for 674 yards and 3 touchdowns. He had 2 games with more 100 receiving yards.

In all but 2 games this season, Smith recorded at least 2 catches. His best game of the 2022 season came against Pittsburgh when he hauled in 9 catches for 152 yards on Oct. 8. When Virginia Tech played Notre Dame in October 2021, Smith registered 2 receptions for 19 yards. In 4 seasons at Virginia Tech, Smith ended his time with 74 catches, 1,143 receiving yards, and 7 touchdowns.

Smith will be part of a Notre Dame receiving corps that is tasked with replacing the production of tight end Michael Mayer. Mayer led the Irish in receiving in 2022, but he’s moving on to the NFL.

Notre Dame will end its season against South Carolina in the Gator Bowl on Friday, Dec. 30.
