Notre Dame lands in top-10 in ESPN’s updated preseason rankings

ESPN has updated its way-too-early rankings for the 2022 season, and Notre Dame comes in at No. 6.

The Fighting Irish hold onto the No. 6 spot after a successful spring. There’s an ongoing quarterback battle between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne, but most of the program’s other key starters are known.

Here’s an excerpt of analysis from ESPN’s Mark Schlabach:

“Notre Dame’s offensive line, led by tackles Joe Alt and Blake Fisher, has a chance to be one of the best in the FBS. Bringing back respected offensive line coach Harry Hiestand won’t hurt their chances, either. Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne are locked in a pretty good battle for the starting quarterback job, which might not be decided until late in preseason camp.”

Notre Dame trails only Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Utah and Texas A&M in ESPN’s rankings.

However, the Fighting I

rish’s difficult schedule in 2022 should give them plenty of opportunities to prove they belong in the College Football Playoff conversation.

Notre Dame plays at Ohio State to open the season on Sept. 3. The Fighting Irish also face Clemson, USC and other top programs throughout the year.

Notre Dame’s spring game is on Saturday.
