Notre Dame linked to elite quarterback who is not yet in the transfer portal

Notre Dame is the “expected landing spot” for Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman in the transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Hartman is not yet in the transfer portal, but Thamel reports that he “intends” to do so. Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson hinted at this possibility earlier in the offseason

.

Hartman had a long and productive career at Wake Forest. He became the ACC’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns in Wake Forest’s bowl win over Missouri last week.

Hartman played in parts of the last five seasons for Wake Forest. He has one remaining year of eligibility due to the NCAA’s blanket waiver for COVID-19 during the 2020 season.

Over those five seasons with the Demon Deacons, Hartman threw for 12,967 yards, 110 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He leaves Winston-Salem as the all-time leader in most major passing categories.

He also led Wake Forest t

o perhaps its best stretch of play in program history. He brought Wake Forest to the ACC Championship Game in 2021, winning 11 games in the process (tied for a school record). Wake Forest has made seven straight bowl games, the longest stretch in school history.

If Hartman does land at Notre Dame, he will replace outgoing starter Drew Pyne. Pyne started the final 10 games of Notre Dame’s 2022 season before entering the transfer portal this offseason.

Tyler Buchner, who won Notre Dame’s starting QB job ahead of the 2022 season, is expected to start the Gator Bowl vs. South Carolina.
