Notre Dame has been linked to one of the best quarterbacks in the transfer portal so far this cycle.

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard officially entered the portal on Wednesday afternoon. A few minutes later, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg said Notre Dame is the “likely destination” for Leonard.

Notre Dame will be looking to replace quarterback Sam Hartman this offseason as he is now out of collegiate eligibility. Head coach Marcus Freeman said earlier this month that Notre Dame will pursue a quarterback via the portal this offseason.

Leonard is likely to be one of the best available passers on the market this cycle. Although he had a down year due to injury in 2023, he led Duke to a 9-win season in his first year as a starter in 2022.

Leonard also nearly led Duke to a win over Notre Dame this season. However, after a late touchdown by Notre Dame, Leonard suffered a season-altering ankle injury on Duke’s final drive of the game vs. the Fighting Irish. Leonard had 134 passing yards and 88 rushing yards in that game against Notre Dame.

Notre Dame will have three other scholarship quarterbacks on its roster, pending any other transfers. Steve Angeli and Kenny Minchey are currently on Notre Dame’s roster while CJ Carr is set to sign with the Irish later this month in the class of 2024.

If Leonard does commit to Notre Dame, he would face Elko and Texas A&M in Week 1 next season.
