Notre Dame linebacker Will Schweitzer is stepping away from football.

Schweitzer announced that news on Wednesday morning. He’s medically retiring from football due to a congenital heart condition.

Here’s his announcement:

“Today, I

am announcing my medical retirement from Notre Dame football,” he wrote in-part. “In September, I suffered from a non-football related medical event caused by a congenital heart condition called a PFO. By the grace of God, I have made a full recovery. However, after careful consideration with my family, doctors and coaches, we have decided it is best for me to step down from an active player role.”

Schweitzer said he intends t

o remain a student at Notre Dame and be apart of the football program in a “supporting role.”

Schweitzer was a 3-star signee in Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class. He was the No. 64 linebacker in the country, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

The California native appeared in 3 games for the Irish as a true freshman in 2021. He made the lone tackle of his career in a shutout win over Georgia Tech that season.
