Notre Dame OC rumors: Media, fans react to Tommy Rees' candidacy for Alabama job
Notre Dame OC rumors could be about to heat up.
Current offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has been linked to the vacant Alabama OC job. According to multiple reports, Rees will be in Tuscaloosa to interview for the job on Thursday.
Rees has been on Notre Dame’s coaching staff since 2017 and its offensive coordinator since 2020. He’s also a former Notre Dame quarterback, playing from the Irish from 2010-13.
Rees, 30, is viewed as an up-and-coming assistant coach in the college ranks. Last season, Notre Dame ranked 45th nationally in yards per play despite losing starting quarterback Tyler Buchner in Week 2 to a shoulder injury that cost him the rest of the regular season.
However, Notre Dame fans were often frustrated with Rees and the Irish’s offense in 2022. That was especially true after losses to Marshall and Stanford during the first half of the season.
Here’s how Notre Dame fans and media reacted to the news that Rees will be interviewing for the OC job at Alabama:
On one hand, you'd think Tommy Rees' options would really expand if he makes Notre Dame's 2023 offense everything we think it could be with Sam Hartman, the OL, etc. Think FBS HC or NFL OC.
On the other, this is the Alabama OC job, a pretty good option & launching point itself.

Tommy Rees going to Alabama would be interesting.
Notre Dame's candidate list to replace Tommy Rees if he goes to Alabama would be very interesting. https://t.co/HPvgmIKNHi

Tommy Rees has been with Notre Dame since 2017, first as QB's coach then OC starting in 2020.
2020- ND was 30th in scoring, 26th total Off.
2021- ND 19th in scoring, 45th total Off.
2022- ND 41st in scoring, 60th total Off.— Pat Smith (@patsmithradio) February 2, 2023
Alabama fans hating the possibility of Tommy Rees as OC, and some Notre Dame fans celebrating the possibility that Rees leaves is pretty wild to me.
It would be a loss for Notre Dame if he left for Bama. No doubt.
I’m mostly questioning if he’d actually take that job…

Am I the only one that thinks Tommy Rees’ system will be really successful with the athletes Alabama has at the skill positions?

Whether or not you think Tommy Rees is the guy for Notre Dame; him leaving the program could have seriously negative implications on the 2024 and 2025 classes…

He should be banned from ever coming back to South Bend for committing treason at this level. https://t.co/i4zX1vpmya

A plane from the University of Alabama has landed at South Bend airport and Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is boarding it to fly south for an interview with Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa.
Source says no decision made from Rees’ side of the equation.
