Notre Dame OC search: New candidate emerges to potentially replace Tommy Rees

Notre Dame’s OC search seems to be narrowing to just a select few candidates.

According to a report from FootballScoop’s John Brice, the top candidates are Colorado OC Sean Lewis, Utah OC Andy Ludwig and Kansas State OC Collin Klein. Per Brice’s report, those 3 coaches have received the most “extensive attention” from Notre Dame so far.

While Lewis and Ludwig have previously been mentioned as candidates

to replace Tommy Rees, Klein’s presence as a strong contender is new. Per Brice’s report, Klein interviewed for the job in South Bend on Wednesday. Additionally, Klein and Marcus Freeman share an agent, according to the report.

Klein’s candidacy was also confirmed by Kansas.com’s Kellis Robinett on Thursday evening. Per Robinett’s report, Notre Dame and Klein have talked “multiple times” throughout this process and there is mutual interest from both parties.

Klein just finished his 1st season as Kansas State’s offensive coordinator. However, he’s been on staff as the program’s QB coach since 2017. He’s a K-State alum who played quarterback for the Wildcats from 2008-12.

Kansas State’s offense averaged 6.12 yards per play in 2022, which ranked 5th in the Big 12. K-State’s offense ranked No. 26 nationally, per SP+ ratings

this past season.
