Notre Dame QB Drew Pyne reportedly makes transfer portal decision

Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne intends to enter the transfer portal, according to a report.

That’s per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes that Pyne has three years of eligibility remaining.

This is a bit of a surprising decision, as Pyne started 10 games for the Fighting Irish this season and led them to an 8-2 record in those contests. Pyne took over for Tyler Buchner, who suffered a season-ending injury back in September.

Pyne had an up-and-down season, but ultimately helped Notre Dame turn its season around after an 0-2 start. He completed 64.6% of his passes for 2,021 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Notre Dame will presumably look for a starting quarterback in the portal this offseason, as it did with Jack Coan for the 2021 campaign. Texas’ Hudson Card and Georgia Tech’s Jeff Sims are a couple options who have already entered the portal.

The Fighting Irish could also have internal options at the position. Buchner, should he decide to return, is expected to be healthy for spring practice. Notre Dame also has true freshman Steve Angeli on its roster. The Irish also have a commitment from 4-star QB Kenny Minchey in the class of 2023.

The transfer portal officially opens on Dec. 5.
