Notre Dame is a consensus 17.5-point underdog — and possibly still growing — against Ohio State on Saturday night.

Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner commented on the point spread during a sit-down interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe on Tuesday.

“You know, I think it’s a lot of points,” Buchner said. “I think I sort of see it as motivation. A lot of guys on the team sort of see it as a little bit of disrespect almost.

“When [coach Marcus Freeman] brought it up in the team meeting it sort of came to my mind and I was like, ‘oh my gosh, that’s a lot of points.’ Personally, I don’t think it should be that many points.”

The Irish have rarely been this big of an underdog in a road game — it’s only happened 6 times previously since 2000. The Irish’s last outright victory in this circumstance came in 2007 in an upset win over UCLA.

Earlier in the week, Freeman said he would use the point spread as bulletin-board material in a team meeting with the Irish.

Buchner will be making his first career start at Ohio Stadium on Saturday night. He played limited snaps last season and recorded 3 passing touchdowns and 3 rushing touchdowns.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET.
