Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer on bouncing back: ‘You really can’t sulk in these losses’

Notre Dame is 0-2 for the first time in over a decade after losing to Marshall on Saturday afternoon.

For the second straight week, the Fighting Irish’s offense stalled in the second half. Notre Dame scored 14 points in the 4th quarter, but one of those touchdowns came in the final minute when the outcome had already been decided.

After the game, tight end Michael Mayer — who is also a team captain — talked through Notre Dame’s approaching to rebounding from an 0-2 start.

“You really can’t sulk in these losses,” Mayer said in his postgame press conference. “We’re 0-2, yes it’s horrible. Of course it’s horrible. But we’re just going to prepare for the next team, try to execute the best we can execute and just keep playing the season.”

Mayer had a solid individual day vs. the Thundering Herd. He caught 8 passes for 103 yards and was Tyler Buchner’s most-targeted receiver.

But it wasn’t enough. Notre Dame averaged just 4.7 yards per play and was completely unable to run the ball on Marshall.

“We’ll watch the film tomorrow and Tuesday we’ll start preparing for Cal,” Mayer added. “Hopefully we get a win there and start rolling then.”
