Notre Dame receiver Matt Salerno is coming back to South Bend for his sixth season of college football.

Salerno made that announcement on Friday evening on Instagram:

Salerno will return as a veteran presence in Notre Dame’s wide receiver room next season. As a former walk-on, Salerno has contributed at receiver and on special teams as a punt returner for the Irish.

Notre Dame will be looking for more production from its receivers in 2023. The Irish struggled at that position this season, instead choosing to lean on All-American tight end Michael Mayer. But with Mayer headed to the NFL, Notre Dame will need to find a new No. 1 passing option next season.

Salerno isn’t likely to be that player, but he could find ways to contribute. In 2022, Salerno caught 5 passes for 62 yards and 1 touchdown. He also returned 4 punts for 30 yards this season.

Notre Dame will play South Carolina in the Gator Bowl later this month.
