Notre Dame’s program is in a very interesting place as it enters the 2022 campaign.

While the Fighting Irish are dealing with a coaching transition from Brian Kelly to Marcus Freeman, program morale seems to be at an all-time high.

Freeman was an exceptionally popular choice to succeed Kelly — both amongst the fan base and the current roster. So far, that has paid off to the tune of the No. 1 recruiting class in 2023, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Is that high morale sustainable through the 2022 season? Expectations are high in South Bend once again. Notre Dame’s regular season win total has been set at 8.5 by FanDuel.

Here’s a video breaking down Notre Dame’s 2022 roster, schedule and regular season win total:

Notre Dame has very few on-field question marks going into this season — but the biggest one is a major concern.

The Fighting Irish will have to get good quarterback play from either Tyler Buchner or Drew Pyne if they want to reach their lofty goals in 2022. Replacing a talented running back in Kyren Williams and finding more down-field threats at wide receiver are also on the offseason to-do list.

However, the rest of Notre Dame’s roster appears to be loaded. Tight end Michael Mayer is returning and should be an All-American candidate at year’s end. Notre Dame also returns key defensive players like Isaiah Foskey and JD Bertrand. Freeman’s staff also landed a commitment from Northwestern safety Brandon Joseph to help replace Kyle Hamilton.

Tough matchups with Ohio State, Clemson and USC highlight Notre Dame’s always-difficult schedule. If the Fighting Irish can win at least 2 of those games, they should be in the mix for the College Football Playoff in December.

Notre Dame opens the 2022 season at Ohio State on Sept. 3.
